November 8, 2009 Choosing a domain name: tips
When you’ve found your project idea, choosing right away a name is a good thing.
Often, at this moment everything is clear. You know what your site should be, what it should do and how you would call it. Use this moment to choose a name.
A small check-list before buying it:
- is it short? 10 letters max is good
- is it easy to pronounce or write for your target audience?
- is it available? use (trustable*) registrar’s domain search
- have you googled it? you might have surprises
If everything’s ok, good, buy it.
If not, start the process again while you’re in a clear state of mind.
But don’t worry too much, domain name is only part of the success of a website. Concentrate on the content and usefulness.

Domain parking problems have shown it’s better to registrate first, and watch it fail if it’s already registered, than checking from registrar tools, or even simple domain access and Google search.
I can’t remember or find the studies (complete with numbers, examples and culprits) but that’s quite old in Web Best Practices.

Network Solutions has done what you describe Domain name front running: registering domains by users.
Fortunately, from my experience, most of the registrars or domain search tools can be trusted.
